Chakra Balancing for Harmony in Mind, Body and Spirit

Chakra Balancing for Harmony in Mind, Body and Spirit

Chakra balancing. This form of energy healing seems to be more and more on the rise within the wellness community. But what exactly are Chakras and how do they get out of balance in the first place?

To understand the Chakras, let’s first talk about energy.

Have you ever felt anger boiling in the pit of your stomach when a friend has betrayed you, or that profoundly crushing feeling in your heart after a bad breakup or a loss?

On the contrary, have you ever felt your heart brimming with excitement and euphoria at the thought of the one you love?

Our thoughts and emotions are vibrations of energy, so it’s not surprising that we would feel the physical sensations of that energy manifested in our bodies.

Chakras, or cakras in Sanskrit, refer to concentrated energy centers in the body that push and pull Prana, otherwise known as Chi, Qi, or Vital Life Force Energy, through Nadis, or energetic meridians, to maintain optimum health and harmony in mind, body and spirit.

The Chakra system originated in India thousands of years ago, and while Chakra healing has become widely popularized in the west as a system of 7 energy focal points, there are actually a number of different Chakra systems that contain between 5 and 114.

For the purpose of this post, though, I will focus on the main 7, which align from the base of the spine all the way up to the top of the head.

Chakras are not physical matter and cannot be seen with the eye or X-Ray, but rather they are understood and visualized as spinning vortices of energy, often depicted as different colored pinwheels or petaled flowers.

Just as it is essential for our arteries to be clear in order to pump blood to our vital organs, we want our Chakras to be properly aligned, balanced, and open, so that energy is able to flow fluidly and freely through them as well.

However, just as our arteries can become clogged, so too can our Chakras;

This typically occurs after experiencing trauma, loss, abuse, fear, illness, or when faced with chronic stress. Spending too much time in the company of negative people can also have an adverse effect — even dwelling in our own negative beliefs and self talk.

Negative energy has a lower vibration and is heavier than positive energy, so when there is an accumulation and build up of negative energy in the body, the flow becomes obstructed, weakened or blocked off all together.

This leads to overactive or underactive Chakras, and ultimately manifests in an array of physical and or psychological issues if not properly tended to and cleared.

  • Reiki or other forms of energy therapy: Dissolves blockages and restores balance
  • Yoga: Releases tension and stimulates movement
  • Meditation: Brings deeper awareness to each energy center
  • Color Therapy: Stimulates specific chakra energy with resonating color frequencies
  • Aromatherapy: Essential oils directly affect the nervous system and promote wellness in the mind and body
  • Healing crystals: Move, diffuse, direct and focus energy with resonating vibrational crystal frequencies
  • Practicing gratitude and forgiveness: Releases toxic thoughts and emotions

In the 7 Chakra system, Chakras 1 through 3 are commonly referred to as the “Chakras of Matter,” and correspond to more physical states. Chakras 5 through 7, likewise, are referred to as “Chakras of Spirit”. The 4th Chakra (The Heart Chakra) lies in between, and bridges the energy of our physical bodies with the energy of Spirit.

Below is a list of physical and emotional states each Chakra is commonly associated with and how the energy of each Chakra manifests, as well as some common tips for clearing and balancing them.

I would like to point out that many experts in Sanskrit language and Indian culture and philosophy assert that there is not significant evidence of some of these specific attributes and qualifiers in the original Sanskrit sources.

That said, while our understanding of the Chakra system may have indeed evolved and been adapted over time, these adaptations have nevertheless helped many to deepen their self awareness and enhanced their ability to heal.
